Thor is a 2011 American superhero film based on comic book character of the same name published by Marvel Comics and is the fourth film released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was released on April 21, 2011 in Australia and is scheduled for release on May 6, 2011 in the United States. Thor was also released in 3-D and IMAX 3D. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins with Kenneth Branagh directing a script by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne.
The project of a film adaptation of Thor was in "development hell" for several years before Marvel Studios signed Protosevich to write its script in 2006. Matthew Vaughn was to direct the film in late 2008 for a release in 2010. Branagh replaced Vaughn in late 2008, and the film's release was rescheduled into 2011. The main characters were cast in 2009, and principal photography took place from January to May 2010.
Plot
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is a brave yet arrogant warrior who lives in Asgard, one of the Nine Realms connected by Cosmic Tree of Life. His father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), the ruler of Asgard, once led his army in a battle against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim and their leader Laufey (Colm Feore), who intended to use an artifact known as the Casket of Ancient Winters to take over the Nine Realms, starting with Earth. The Giants were defeated and the Casket was sealed away in Odin's vault, where it was protected by the Destroyer - an invincible metallic golem loyal to Odin.
Years later, on the day of Thor's coronation as king, Asgard is attacked by a band of Frost Giants who intend to steal the Casket. Although the Frost Giants fail, an outraged Thor goes against his father's orders and travels to Jotunheim to confront Laufey. Accompanying him are his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his childhood friend Sif (Jaimie Alexander) as well as the Warriors Three: Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Fandral (Joshua Dallas) and Hogun (Tadanobu Asano). The group is overpowered and later saved by Odin, who is enraged since Thor's action lead to the war between the two realms, which ended years ago by a fragile truce, to start again. Odin strips Thor of his powers and banishes him to Earth alongside with his hammer Mjolnir, which contains his powers and is protected by a spell that allows only those who are worthy to wield it.
Thor lands in New Mexico and is found by a scientist named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as well as her assistant Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and her mentor, Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard). The three initially believe him to be delusional, but are eventually convinced that he is the god of Thunder. Meanwhile, Mjolnir is found by S.H.I.E.L.D. and agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is deployed to study it. Coulson forcibly acquires Jane's data about the wormhole opened by Heimdall (Idris Elba), the gatekeeper of Asgard who transported Thor to Earth. Thor discovers the hammer's location and breaks into a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility built around it to retrieve it, but fails to lift it and accepts the fact that he's stranded on Earth after escaping with Jane - whom he falls in love with.
Meanwhile, Loki discovers that he is Laufey's son and was adopted by Odin after the war ended. When Odin is forced to undertake the Odinsleep for 24 hours to regenerate, Loki usurps the throne and offers Laufey the chance to kill Odin as well as the opportunity retrieve the Casket on the condition that he controls Asgard. Sif learns of the plot and convince Heimdall to allow her and the Warriors Three to go find Thor on Earth. Loki however discovers this and sends the Destroyer after them.
Sif and the Warriors Three arrive on Earth and find Thor, only to be attacked and defeated by the Destroyer. Thor confronts it alone and proves himself to be worthy. The hammer returns to him and, with his powers restored, he defeats the Destroyer and heads to Asgard with his friends after promising to Jane that he will return for her.
In Asgard, Loki betrays and kills Laufey just as he is about to kill Odin and reveals that his true plan is to use the Bifrost Bridge, which connects the Nine Realms, to prove himself to Odin by destroying Jotunheim. Thor arrives and confronts his brother, claiming that Jotunheim's destruction will only worsen the situation. After a confrontation, Thor realizes that the only way to stop Loki is to destroy the Bifrost Bridge and does so - stranding himself in Asgard. Odin awakens and Loki realizes that his father agrees with Thor. Loki then lets go of Odin's hand and disappears into a black hole created by the Bifrost Bridge's destruction. Thor makes amends with Odin and stays in Asgard until the Bifrost Bridge is rebuilt while Jane and her team begin searching for a way to open a portal to Asgard so that Jane can reunite with Thor.
In a post-credits scene, Dr. Selvig is taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where he meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Fury explains that he wants Selving to study the recently-discovered Cosmic Cube, which holds infinite power. Selvig agrees as it is revealed that he is being mind-controlled by Loki, who is seeking revenge.
